Breathe easy
If your health suffers when pollution levels rise - wouldn't you rather know
ahead when levels are on the up?
Have you ever smelt traffic fumes when standing on the corner of a busy street? Ever noticed
dust from building demolition, or smoke from a garden fire. Air pollution is created when petrol,
gas, diesel, wood or coal burns. Unfortunately pollution levels in all our major towns and cities
are on the increase especially in the teaming metropolis that is our capital.
Clean air is important to all of us and enjoying the outdoors - whether it be a cycle to work or
a jog in the park - is essential to healthy urban living. Whilst air pollution to most of us is an
unpleasant nuisance, it can impact on human health.
Some groups are especially vulnerable - children, older people and people with existing heart
or lung problems. Air pollution is often a significant trigger to their symptoms, with higher levels
making them worse. Now airTEXT can provide an early warning service for those especially
at risk.
The service works by using satellite and street-level measurements of air pollution across
London and computer models which forecast the pollution level in each borough on a street by
street basis, for the day ahead.
When it is likely to rise above normal levels, subscribers to the free service are sent a message
alerting them. When they sign-up, subscribers can choose whether they receive the alerts by
text message, email or a recorded message sent to their home telephone.
airTEXT is a useful way for people to find out when the pollution level for the day ahead is likely
to affect them, and then take extra precautions, such as ensuring they carry their asthma inhaler
or other reliever medication with them, or by limiting the amount of time they spend outdoors in
polluted areas.
One satisfied subscriber said “Before I received airTEXT alerts, I could often be caught out and
suffer with my asthma symptoms. It really helps to have that extra peace of mind, and know
when I might be more likely to need to take my inhaler and it doesn't cost me a thing!â€
Stephen Potter from the airTEXT Team, says “This is a relatively new service, that is currently
only offered to people who either live or work in London or Slough, and we are delighted to be
leading the way.
We've had such a great response, and evaluation of the service has shown that subscribers
see it as invaluable in protecting their health and wellbeing. The pollution information and
health advice contained in airTEXT alerts really seems to be making a difference to people's
lives which is fantastic!â€
So breathe easy - protecting yourself and your loved ones from the health risks associated with pollution is not only simple - its completely free!
